What is this?
Flooring calculator estimates square footage needed, material costs, labor costs, and total project budget for hardwood, laminate, vinyl (LVP), tile, or carpet installations. Includes waste factor (5-15% depending on material) and underlayment costs. How to use
Measure room length and width in feet. Select flooring type (affects waste factor and labor cost). Enter price per square foot from retailer. Choose DIY or professional installation. Calculator shows total sq ft needed, material/labor costs, and boxes required.Tips
- **Waste factors**: Vinyl: 5%, Hardwood/Laminate/Carpet: 10%, Tile: 15%. Diagonal tile patterns need 20%+ extra.
- **Acclimation**: Hardwood/laminate needs 48-72 hours in room (unopened) to adjust to temperature/humidity. Prevents buckling.
- **Underlayment**: Hardwood/laminate/vinyl need foam/cork underlayment ($0.50-1/sq ft). Reduces noise, moisture barrier.
- **Flooring lifespan**: Hardwood: 30-100 years (refinish 3-5 times). Laminate: 15-25. Vinyl: 10-20. Tile: 50-100. Carpet: 5-15.
- **DIY vs Pro**: Laminate/vinyl = easy DIY (floating floor, click-lock). Hardwood/tile = hire pro (skill, tools required).
- **Subfloor prep**: Must be clean, flat, dry. High spots scraped, low spots filled with leveling compound.
- **Tools needed (DIY)**: Saw (miter or table), spacers, tapping block, pull bar, utility knife. Rent expensive tools ($40-80/day).
- **Labor costs**: Laminate/vinyl/carpet: $3/sq ft. Hardwood: $8/sq ft. Tile: $10/sq ft (includes mortar, grout).
- **Best value**: Laminate looks like hardwood, 1/2 the cost, easier DIY install. Vinyl waterproof = best for bathrooms/basements.
- **Carpet costs**: Budget $1-3/sq ft (wears fast). Mid $3-6. Premium $6-12. Padding adds $0.50-1/sq ft.
- **Buy extra**: Always 5-10% extra for future repairs. Flooring lots vary in color, discontinued quickly.
- **Installation direction**: Laminate/hardwood: parallel to longest wall or toward main light source. Creates visual length.
