Arman Tsarukyan and Georgio Poullas wrestle at RAF 6 | RAF
This is the live blog for Arman Tsarukyan vs. Georgio Poullas, the co-main event for RAF 6 on Saturday night at Mullet Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
Quite possibly the best 155-pound MMA fighter in the world today, Tsarukyan is currently engaging in side-quests while he waits for his opportunity to challenge for the UFC lightweight title. On top of picking up a win in the octagon last year, Tsarukyan also went 3-0 in grappling matches and dominated Lance Palmer at RAF 5 in January. Tsarukyan trained in wrestling as a youth, but switched focuses elsewhere before committing to MMA, and has shown clear ability on the mats.
An Ohio State wrestling champion in high school, Poullas wrestled in college at Cleveland State, but rose to prominence as a social media star with the gimmick that people cannot take him down. Now he puts that to the test against his toughest challenge so far.
Check out the Arman Tsarukyan vs. Georgio Poullas live blog below:
Period 1
Poullas looks JACKED in there. Arman, of course, is also built. They feel things out to start. A lot of hand fighting, trying to get head control. And Arman stands up and complains to the referee about something. I don’t know what, but they get back to it, and Arman just straight slaps him!
Apparently, Poullas had hit him before. They show a replay, and yep, he sure was getting slappy in there. Retaliation, though, Arman’s was worse. And now we’re talking things over, and Poullas may decide not to wrestle? This is wild.
Ref makes Poullas wrestle or stop, and an immediate slap, and the action stops again! Now, Izzy Martinez comes out, and everyone is talking and complaining. This is nuts. And finally, we get back to wrestling.
More hand-fighting, and the referee puts Poullas on the shot clock. Arman is getting very mad in there about more shenanigans, and the ref warns him again. Arman complains again, and Poullas shoves Arman in the face, and this has completely devolved into nonsense. We end the round at 2-1 Arman after a whole lot of nonsense.
Period 2
Ben Askren gets brought in for commentary and says Poullas is a bad wrestler and is just trying to cheese a win by getting Arman to DQ himself. LOL. Incredible work.
A little cleaner start to this period, and we get a real series as Poullas gets an underhook and they start shoving. Poullas nearly gets a push out, but Arman is nimble at the very end. Poullas continues with the aggressive handfighting, and Arman is completely off his offense. We tie up, and Arman gets another point for Poullas’ stalling. And an accidental headbutt, but we press on.
Now, Arman starts to get going, pushes Poullas out. Poullas still hasn’t given up a takedown, but he’s not going to win. And the round ends, and some more extracurriculars after the whistle! Arman tried to slap hands, but Poullas no-sold him, and so Arman slapped at him. No penalty, and Arman is up 4-1, but this is so bush league.
Period 3
Before the third period, Poullas calls Izzy Martinez over, and he’s getting his fingers wrapped. Ben Askren suggests Poullas is gaming the system for extra rest, and just outright says Poullas is on steroids. Ben Askren is electric in the booth.
We’re starting hot, and Arman comes out super aggressive. He wants the takedown, but gets over-aggressive! Poullas kept in motion and gets a takedown! And then he pushes Arman out, but they don’t give him the point. Poullas will get that upon replay, meaning we’re all tied up!
Askren right back on the attack and Boom! Clean shot double leg that Arman drives and gets the takedown! But he’s out of the ring, so there’s a scoring discrepancy. Right now, the score reads 5-3 Arman, but I think it’s 6-4 Arman.
Short time and the hand fighting has basically become powerslap. Poullas looks for a takedown, but Arman stuffs it at the end, and he’s going to win.
WHOA!!!!!!!! After the bout, Arman pounced on Poullas and threw some ground-and-pound. Just straight up assault, and now everyone has rushed the mat. Total chaos!!! Arman went full Arman.
Brawls erupted in the crowd. Everything went completely nuts. Finally, it’s under control. Arman wins, but he definitely loses in all of this.
Official Decision
So, given the chaos, we don’t get an official decision, but Arman Tsarukyan def. Georgio Poullas via Points (5-3)
