Body fat percentage is the proportion of your body weight that is fat vs lean mass (muscle, bone, organs). The Navy Body Fat Calculator uses circumference measurements to estimate body fat - more accurate than BMI for athletes and individuals.How to use
Choose your preferred unit system (Imperial or Metric). Select your gender and enter age, weight, height. Measure your neck circumference (below Adam's apple) and waist (at belly button level, relaxed). For females, also measure hip circumference at widest point. Use a flexible tape measure and take measurements while standing.Tips
- Measure in the morning before eating for consistency - hydration and meals affect measurements
- For men: 10-15% shows visible abs, <10% is shredded, 15-20% is fit but softer
- For women: 15-20% shows abs/definition, 20-25% is fit/toned, 25-30% is average healthy
- Body fat % is more important than weight - 180 lbs (82 kg) at 12% looks very different than same weight at 25%
- Navy method is 3-4% accurate - DEXA scan, Bod Pod, or hydrostatic are more precise but expensive
- Take measurements every 2-4 weeks during weight loss - losing 0.5-1% body fat per month is realistic
- Don't compare yourself to social media - many "6% body fat" claims are actually 10-12%
- Navy formula works in any unit - internally converts to inches for calculation accuracy
