How accurate is the "7 dog years = 1 human year" rule?
The 7:1 rule is outdated and inaccurate. Dogs mature much faster in their first 2 years (reaching 24 human years by age 2), then age 4-7 years annually depending on breed size. Small breeds live longer and age slower after maturity.
Why does breed size matter for dog aging?
Larger dogs age faster and have shorter lifespans. Giant breeds (Great Danes, Mastiffs) live 7-10 years and are seniors by age 6. Small breeds (Chihuahuas, Yorkies) live 12-16 years and stay adults until age 10. Medium and large breeds fall in between.
When is my dog considered a senior?
Giant breeds: 6 years, Large breeds: 7 years, Medium breeds: 8 years, Small breeds: 10 years. Senior dogs need vet visits every 6 months (vs annual for adults) and monitoring for arthritis, dental disease, and organ issues.
